SLEEP APNEA LINKED TO EARLIER DEATHS

According to American researchers, severe sleep apnea can increase a persons chance of dying early. However, people with mild cases do not share that risk.

As explained by The Vancouver Sun, They [researchers] said people with severe breathing disorders during sleep were more likely to die from a variety of causes than similar people without such sleep disorders. The risks are most obvious in men aged 40 to 70, Naresh Punjabi of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and colleagues found.

Sleep apnea occurs when the upper airway collapses during sleep. The primary symptom is strong snoring, and its severity is measured by the number of instances where a person finds it hard to breathe during his/her sleep.

Sleep apnea is linked to obesity, high blood pressure, heart failure, and stroke. However, its relationship with death has not been quantified.

Statistics indicate that Men aged 40 to 70 with severe sleep-disordered breathing were twice as likely to die from any cause as healthy men the same age.

The study said, Among men, 42.9 percent did not have sleep-disordered breathing, 33.2 percent had mild disease, 15.7 percent had moderate disease, and 8.2 percent had severe disease.

And for women, about 25 percent had sleep apnea, 8 percent had moderate cases while 3 percent had severely disordered breathing.
Common treatments for this sleep disorder include weight loss, nasal CPAP, and surgery.

The study was funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
